Windows serve the primary purpose of bringing in light and aeration of our indoor space. When coupled with beautiful curtains or drapes, they instantly serve a decorative role.
Now spaces around and near windows are more often than not under-used and difficult to accentuate, especially if you have a big house. They form that ‘awkward space’ in your house. You’ll want to decorate the space but still let the window serve, without blocking it.
So here are a few ways I have put together to help solve the riddle:
Reading nook
This is the most common use of the space below windows. You can have floor to ceiling or shorter shelving on either or both sides of the window to hold your books and other items. Arrange them in a creative way like grouping similar colours. Fit a bench or pallet seat just below the sill. The benches especially if inbuilt are usually fitted with drawers which means more storage. Spice up the bench by adding throw pillows and/ or a throw blanket.

In addition, you can have a desk and chair to create a mini working space with the advantage of sufficient lighting and fresh air to help you be productive.
Meditation/yoga space
Create a spot for yoga practise. It is your relaxation spot, your ‘happy place’. Let it give you joy by just looking at it. Make it comfy but flexible so that you can easily move stuff while exercising. This is the place you adorn with anything that makes you happy and allows you to get in tune with your thoughts. Throw in bold pillows, puffs, a bean bag or arm chair to seat on. Have your blanket stand against a wall, include house plants, add paintings and other wall hangings and rags to your floor.

Spot for taking photos
In this era where everything is documented on camera and shared on social media, everyone wants a great picture. Any photographer will tell you how essential good lighting is for those good photos, especially natural lighting. It will have your photos looking professional and of good quality. This is important for insta lovers and anyone seeking to advertise merchandise. Have a neat background to go with, that is, the room that hosts the window.

Display of items
You have beautiful items lying somewhere in your house, for which you lack space to showcase, consider that area near a window. Arrange your items so that they are tilted towards the light, but not in the way of the light for a great visual. Get creative, a bench, table, desk, shelf or stand to hold up the smaller items. Artists, art lovers, collectors and anyone in that line can use this space to display their work and mementos.

Bonus
Cill; do not neglect this spot. The simplest way to decorate them is by adding tiny succulents, a vase and other small decor items where the window does not require curtains. Could be in your bathroom, kitchen, office etc.

Explore options to decide the most befitting use for your idle-near-window space. Make sure to maintain your personal style.
