First time house decorating: a simple guide.

If you just moving out of a hostel, your parents home…moving out on your own…this is for you. Now although it is your first apartment it doesn’t have to be basic and you don’t need to be confused. Here’s the simplest guide you could use to achieve a perfectly put together space.

Do your research

Owning an apartment for the first time means there’s a lot you may not have information or experience on. Maybe you don’t know what interior decor style you love most. You may also be wondering where to find stuff for your space. I advice that you first do your research on the various interior decor styles. This will guide you on what colours and decor items go with each style. Also remember to find out where you can shop your items from.

Assess your space

Knowing what space you are dealing with allows you to decide on so many things like furniture size and alignment, colour choices, lighting fixtures etc. If you have a tiny space then you know white and neutrals are your friends.

Notice how white makes the space in this photo by @chilledhome on Instagram look fresh, airy and chic? You wouldn’t even feel how narrow the room really is.

Certain furniture layouts can also help minimize space usage so it doesn’t look or feel squeezed.

The rattan seat, poufs and the planter are aligned against one wall therefore creating more space than they would if they were ‘distributed’ around the room.

Other than size, it is important to determine the lighting, fixtures already in the room, wall colours etc. This way you know how to integrate what is already provided for with what you have, or what it is that you are going to change.

Make your choices

Now that you have options you can pick out your style, colours and hence decor and furniture. You need stick to that as you go shopping keeping in mind the space that you have.

Pennies for Fortune here shows us how diverse home decor items can be, you only have to choose and display correctly.

Having shopped for and assembled everything that you need, you can start with the arrangement. You can try out various arrangements and see which one looks best. However, remember that you don’t have to have everything at once. You can always shop for items as time moves on.

Another important thing to remember when arranging is to ensure you leave enough space for moving around and do not clamp together many decor items on one spot. Image by Shopify.
