Everything you need to know:
I am writing this in the middle of a pandemic that has dragged on for far too long. Things have been at a standstill, giving us so much time that some of us have run out of things to do. Well, how about a makeover for your home!?
Re-styling is simply changing appearance. It varies from an effortless action like changing the lamp on your desk, to an entire-house refurnishing. Maybe your vanity needs re-arranging, you need a change of curtains or it’s your lounge that’s begging for refreshing.
For whatever form or redecorating, below is what you need to know beforehand.
When is a makeover due?
Mostly, you know your space needs a makeover when you’ve been stuck with a look for forever. It may suddenly look boring and uninspiring requiring a better vibe. Or:
- you want to actualize a dream look
- styling for an occasion e.g you could be decorating your dining room for special guests
- changing the use of a room e.g from a nursery to a guest bedroom
- you could be bored too…
Explore
There is a myriad of decor style choices you can try out. Be flexible and open to ideas. Find out what’s out there that would also work for you. You could, for example, switch up your minimalism to modern chic and end up liking it better.
Before you touch anything though, plan. Decide on the best time for re-decorating, do research on what you’ll be needing and go over activities that will be involved.

Budget
Makeovers can be draining. This is because you will be getting rid or items, replacing them with new ones. If you contracted services, you’ll also be paying fees. See why it is important to put aside cash and make a budget? You might also need to save in advance.
Find out whose services you’ll be needing
Depending on how much work there is to be done, you could use some help. An interior stylist for guidance, your local fundi to fix some things for you, painter if you’ll be repainting or just a strong hand to move heavy stuff around may come in handy. Contact these people in good time to make sure they are available at the time of the makeover.
Stock up
Don’t be running to the store in the middle of an activity to go get something that you overlooked. Make a checklist for every supply, tool and item you will be using. Glue, a drill for screws, new vases etc. Have everything ready and close by so that you move faster and smoothly.
Declutter

Get rid of everything you won’t be needing. I don’t exactly mean discarding, but put them away so have space for the new stuff and to move around. If there are old things you’d like to keep, do not shy away from refurbishing. Give that photo frame a new colour, a new cover to your old pillow… Alternatively, find use for them in other rooms and it could save you some coins.
Expect a mess
You might have had to scrap off a wallpaper, tear down a shelf, some things will even break from knocking them over and all the moving around. Be ready to scrub, dust, wipe, sweep, vacuum clean…Clean up for clear surfaces to set your accessories on.
You’ll be ready to move back furniture and decor items when all is done.

Maintenance
Remember to always tidy up if you intend to keep the new look. Have it looking freshly done all the time.

So whether you are simply revitalizing or transitioning to a whole new style, whether it is minor or major restyling, i hope you now feel empowered to give your space that novel face it deserves.
